Gear slip/clicking - what is the cause?

I have a SRAM 11-27 10 speed cassette on my best bike. I initially thought I had a problem either with the BBB wearing or the hub/freewheel as there was a regular slight slip/clicking which I could not pinpoint. It now seems it is only occurring when on the 5th sprocket down (19t?) but on both the large and small chainring. It appears OK in any other gears.
Being in the middle of the cassette it is a regularly used sprocket.
The sprocket does not appear damaged externally.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Still thinking!

From your description of the slip/click, my first thoughts would be worn chain or sticking pawls in the free hub.

if only one cog does it and it's one you use a lot then i'd guess it's worn, have you checked your chain for wear/stretch?

without a fresh cassette to compare with, it can be hard to tell if a cog is worn just by looking

this page has some examples and explains how to measure the chain...

if the cable has a kink that is catching when in that gear, that might do it too

  • I suggest to check the vertical alignment of your derailleur... if you observe the cage to be bent (inwards or outwards) then you'll have to have the hanger straightened. This is often the cause of those noises

  • I did a dumb ass thing which had exactly the same results. Took the chain off for cleaning and then put it back on upside down. It's a kmc with their quick link thing which has to go a certain way up. Weirdly it only made an effect on two cogs.
Some people are like slinkies - not much use for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

    I must be missing something....

I've got Shimano, KMC and Campag chains all joined by a KMC Missing Link. AFAIK none of the chains or the Missing Link is directional and has a right way up.

IIRC teh wipperman quick links are directional. KMC ones aren't.

You can still take out the wipperman links to reverse them.

I think the poster was leg-pulling?
