Hi all...

I used to MTB a lot, sold my Yeti (biggest mistake of my life) to rasie money as a child was on the way. Back then Hope was all the rage, so most of the components I ever brought were made by hope, since reviving my passion for MTB i have noticed people mention Superstar, I have had a ganders on the web at some of there products and they seem too cheap......so my question is......are the parts reliable?

    Yep.

They had a bad batch of brake pads quite a long time ago, but all good now.

They seem to have less snapping hubs than Hope

The cheap bottom brackets dont last long but the replacement bearings are cheap and easy to replace so who cares if they only last a year or so.

The GTO headsets with the split crown ring are very good for the money mine has lasted 2 years of muck and is still smooth as new and has never needed cleaning out its still on its original grease.

I've had brake pads from them in the past which are great and have just received a set of their discounted AM wheels which appear to be spot on but time will tell how well they are built. Even if they do need truing or rebuilding in the future they're enough of a bargain for it not to be an issue.

I'm a bit miffed I've never received any Haribo from them though

Brake pads and grips have been fine so far....yep the haribos are far too small but Wiggle's are no bigger.

I'm running SSC built wheelset on SSC hubs, pedals, grips and brakepads with no concerns at all. I will be adding bars and headset to my current project. The seatposts are a singlebolt affair and from experience, I steer well clear of those designs - I'm hoping they get a proper two bolt head soon though as I'd have it. A group test of chain devices said the SSC one worked fine but was a bit noisy, so I'm going with a blackspire for the project bike.
I popped in the other day and got to hold a chainring they'd made! But their website promises cake for visitors... I didn't get any cake... least they could of done was given me haribo... I'll be shopping in wiggle from now on. No wait, I blame wiggle for the lack of cake.

Had 3 sets of wheels, lots of brake pads, bottom bracket, dropper seatpost, skewers and a few other bits

Only problems I had were with the BB, hardly any grease in it & crap seals, it gave up after a couple of months and the skewers were a bit on the flimsy side, everything else has been spot on, good service too.
A berm? were you expecting one?

Thumbs up for SS from me, only issue I had was with a seat post clamp which I bent, but that wasn't their fault really.
  • Ordered a few things from them, namely floaty rotors and haven't had any issues with them. Reccomendations from me!

  • Sound reliable, thanks for all the comments and recomendations........I will give them a try, but I will be disapointed if I don't get any haribos

  • Nick, I have been out of the game for several years, just getting back in to it, new FS purchased and HT on the way.............I like to customize my rigs, hence the use of hope parts.......so are you saying hope are not as good as they used to be?

.............I like to customize my rigs, hence the use of hope parts.......

Why do you need to use Hope parts to customise.

Yes back in the 90's they were one of the few comapanies who made colourful parts....but the world has moved on since and Hope don't seem to have, answering your next question!
  • Point taken.......... This is why I asked my question about superstar products, times move on and things change. I can say that I have already purchased some parts from KCNC and they are of good quality and i'm interested in superstar.......so moving on from hope I am!

Pads are good. Grips are good. That's all I've bought from them so far.

They do what they say on the tin and they're not rubbish quality (and they claim stuff is made in the same factory as XYZ etc. Who knows about that, but seem fine).

    Excellent value for money anyway.

I have Superstar nano pedals, brake pads, grips and i have their hollowtech BB tool. All is well at the moment.
Pedals are grippy, light and have a good sized platform as i found DMR v12s too small.
Brake pads are cheap and last well.
Grips are errm....grippy :D They do wear quite fast but you can get replacement cartridges for £5.
BB tool was also cheap and does the job nicely.
Bikes are OK, I guess... :-)

They seem pretty selective about what they sell these days, I reckon they know they've got a good enough name now not to undermine it by selling crap. But, just like any other rebrander you do need to bear in mind that just because one part is good (or bad) doesn't really tell you anything about a different part.

Not been impressed by some of the wheel builds, but the good ones are up there with the best and even the poor ones are still decent value just for the parts, I reckon. Have to say I've personally found their customer service flakey- they drove me mental when I was trying to get my seatpost fixed. But that was sorted eventually.
