Frayed gear cables

My SRAM X9 rear mech seems to be shredding gear cables. Well, on my third set of cables in 6 months anyway. The running surface on the mech seems slightly pitted, I assume this has occurred from running an unnoticed frayed cable which has eaten into the surface of the metal.

Anyone else had this problem and was the solution a new rear mech? Or is this an excuse to buy that dremel Ive been after and try and grind the surface smooth?

Pretty disappointed as the mech is only 6 months old.

Where is it fraying? Please explain.

  • In the groove/channel that the cable loops round before it heads off back towards the locking nut. Its the leading edge of the groove that seems to be pitted/worn. Ive just fitted a new cable and will see how this one goes.
