currently have an 11-28 along with 53/39 up front. thinking of getting an 11-23, 11-25 or even a 12-25. races i will be doing aint hilly so should not be running out of gears if i went for 11-23 although do like the 11-28 for the hills, but dont want to have to swap cassettes all the time. what u guys race on?

Frankly, if you think you need a 28 sprocket for hills in races you're going to struggle to keep up with the pack (unless of course you're talking about sportives, which aren't races at all). 12-25 should give you all the gears you need - rarely will you find an 11 sprocket of any use unless you have a downhill sprint with a tailwind.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

  • I usually race crits on a 53-39 / 12-23.

I doub't you need the 11 and small gaps between gears is very nice once you're used to it. I'd probably move to a 12-25 if there was a significant hill to get over but round here I can't see any reason for more than that.
  • thanks 12-25 it is then for racing, and maybe keep the 11-28 for some hilly sportives.
