Went off to look at one today expecting the entire groupset to be 105 but it isn't.

As far as I can see only the shifters and both derailleurs are 105.

Does this really qualify the bike to be touted as a 105?

You wont find a dale with a full shimano groupset, Chainsets are usually FSA , In most cases to accomodate the
BB 30 Standard, it also rare to find 105 Calipers, Hubs or Front mech on a bike thats claimed to be 105 groupset.

Usually whatever the Sti's are is what they list as groupset, expect to find down grades on Front Mech, Calipers and Hubs. (Most will have a prebuilt wheelset).

Its not a con its just the way they do it.

only brands Like Ghost , Canyon and Rose tend to do full level groupsets out the box, but you can also name your own spec with them.

Worse case I ve seen this year is the Trek 3.1 H2. 105 shifters, Tiagra front mech, 105 Rear Mech , Apex chainset and Non branded calipers and Bontranger hubs.

Apparently though it shifts like a dream,

Is there an argument though that the advertising is misleading? At what point does a 105 become a 105? When it has just one 105 component on it?

You have to read the specs,,,,,I looked at 2011 Caad 8 & 10's....Only the 10 had 105 brakes shifters and derailleurs, the 8 came with lesser brakes.
I think the FSA chainset fitment relates to cannondales BB30 and is lighter than the 105 equivalent anyway.

If you are looking at a 2012 Caad8, there are still 2011 105 Caad 10's available in the sales for similar money. The 10 is a better spec and frame for the $/£/€.

Have a look at the Planet X SRAM Pro SL Red. Advertised as Red, it's only the shifters and derailleurs that are the right level, whereas everything else (chainset, chain, front/rear brakes, cassette) isn't even Force or Rival, rather the bottom of SRAM's offerings, Apex.

I can see why other cheap sellers like Ribble who actually spec/price a Red or Force bike as full groupset got annoyed at PX's claims.
"Mummy Mummy, when will I grow up?"
"Don't be silly son, you're a bloke, you'll never grow up"
  • Well to me a groupset is this:

Brake/shift levers, brake callipers, chain, chainset, bottom bracket, front/rear changers, cassette as a minimum. Possibly pedals/hubs/cables if available?

And by tagging on a groupset name to a bike implies that it comes with that groupset surely? Not just some of the groupset.

At the end of the day they only tag the groupset name on so that you think it is equipped to a certain spec' and if it isn't then the advertising may be misleading.
