Will it all fit together?
Planning a new drivetrain:
Shimano Freehub Body
R550 8/9sp
SRAM PG950 Cassette 9sp
12-26
Shimano 9 Spd HG53 Chain
Stronglight Dural 130mm Shimano 8/9/10 Chainring 53T
Stronglight Dural 130mm Shimano 8/9/10 Chainring 39T
Shimano UN26 Bottom Bracket Square Taper
68-110mm
The rest of the components on the bike are here:

I've kept the gear ratios the same, made sure everything's 9sp and fits the dimensions. Will it all go together in practice? Also, is the new freehub neccessary? I know there's definitely some issue with it, as I can turn the drivetrain without it catching, but could this be another symptom of a buggerd ecassette? (Apologies if that's a stupid question- just thought I should check!)
Finally, is there a headset I can with the same dimensions as a Mindset, but for a considerably cheaper price? There are a lot of discussions on various forums, but no conclusive answers....

The symptom, if I understand correctly is that of a knackered freehub (not cassette)... if it's not catching, either the pawls springs are broken or the mechanism is seized (dirty?). You could try to remove the freehub (should be a 10 mm hexagonal key job), clean with WD40 and lube with thin oil.
Parts will fit, provided your current chainset is for square taper.
Beware, upgrades cost lots of money and rarely bring equal advantagesleft the forum March 20230 -
Thanks for the response: I'll have a go at cleaning the freehub- I imagine it's probably pretty corroded and seized, as with everything on the bike (terrible ebay purchase).
The new drivetrain isn't for an upgrade- the current one is 'worn to the point of being dangerous' according to my LBS....0 -

In that case, I would try and get a new Sora groupset or even Tiagra... after Christmas, with a bit of luck you can buy everything for around 250 pounds. If you add up all the components you mentioned earlier, you'll find out that you're not too far offleft the forum March 20230 -
I can't afford that much, and I already have the derailleurs, cranks and shifters in pretty good condition. The components above add up to about £100...0

I may have confused myself a little... Having a look through the spec on the Specialized website I've worked out it must be a 2007 model- it's got 53-39 chainrings. Therefore it's a sora crankset, which according to Sheldon Brown should be Octalink V22. However, the BB listed on the specifications is the Shimano UN25, which is square taper.
Any insights?0 -
Actually, forget all of that. Judging by the pictures on the Specialized website, it's a 2005 model, despite the seller claiming it to be 2008 (bastard).0
