So Ive just noticed there's play in the freehub. The chain started slipping but rather than the chain or cassette being worn I think it may be the cassette moving out of alignment due to the freehub side to side play. Anyway I have no experience of changing a freehub. Ive had a quick look at the park tools thing but is it pretty straight forward (Ive done a few builds so have some competence) or is it best left to a mechanic? Should there be something I do before I consider a freehub replacement?

Also will the RS80 C50 hubs / freehubs work with the C24 version? I can see them online but not the C24 ones.

Make sure the lock ring is tight. A worm freebody results in no drive more than play.

  • +1 Check it's not the lock ring.

If it isn't then the play is probably due to the bearing in the freehub disintergrating (I haven't had that on a Shimano hub but have had it several times on others). The cheap solution if you're confident is to dissasemble the freehub and replace just the bearing (if you can get it out and work out the size), otherwise the freehub body will need to be changed. It should be quite simple but I'm not sure that the hubs on Shimano's factory wheels are quite as servicable as their normal ones.

UPDATE...Upon cleaning the bike I finally realised what the problem was. I noticed the chain was very slack. Checked the drive train and found the rear mech hanger had seized so the chain slack wasn't being taken out as the gears changed. The mech was only about a year old so not great. Anyway, new mech and shifting is sorted. I tried taking the old one apart but the connecting bolt wouldn't budge.
