Here we go...
Now if you are really clever:
I bought a pair of Dura Ace wheels 2nd hand. Very good value and bought an Ambrosio cassette with Shimano splines for Campag. I gained about 60 negligible grams from my Chrous 10 speed but the shifting is poor.

Once you have had a look at that, I know a man who could help me machine spacers to go between Dura Ace cassette sprockets to provide the correct spacing. Yes/no ? Anyone tried that? I do not know what the structure of a Shimano Cassette is, so I do not know how complex the spacers would have to be. if they are just simple shims that need to be machined, then I cannot foresee any problems.
There are considerations but these are not insurmountable. It may require a Shimano chain for example.
I am willing to give it a go, but the charts don't actually give you the exact width of each respectable spacer. If there is someone who is willing to strip a Shimano 10 speed cassette for me and measure the width of the spacers, i could compare this width of the spacers with that of my Campag Cassette.

I would have thought the best option was to get a Camapg body for the wheels and fit a campag cassette. Only question is does Shimano make one. I would have though they would for higher end wheelsets.

John T - I know a very good machinist locally. Thank you.

Bobgfish - No, there is no way of fitting a Campag cassette to a Simano wheelset. Nobody makes freehub bodies to convert them unfortunately. As quoted in a previous thread on the same subject "Shimano will not allow it".

Didn't know this. Surprised me. Begs the question why no one manufactures one. No demand?

Alternatively, do what I do. I've got Campag 10s levers on my 3 bikes. They all have wheels with Shimano hubs
(best bike has Dura Ace wheels, bought 2nd hand for £100, nothing wrong with them). I use a Shimano 9s cassette
on all of them (with different ratios). My favourite ratio is 13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25-28. Shifting is perfect, as if the
combination was made for each other.

Campag freehub is wider so there is not enough room for one on a Shimano hub. Wheels that will take either freehub have the drive side flange closer to the centre line.
  • If you look at the bottom of the ctc link page that you posted you will see a note about Shiftmate. You can buy these in the UK from SJS Cycles. There are a range of these available to suit Campag/Shimano hybrids. I used one a couple of years back on a winter bike that had Campag shifters with a Shimano cassette. Needs to be set up properly with a good quality inner cable, but works a treat. I had Campag Centaur 10 speed shifters and ultegra 10 speed cassette - shifting was crisp and never had any problems. You can also buy them direct from Shitmate in the USA and the guy is very quick to post - think it took about 10 days.
