D'ya not think the Tour of Qatar is an awful way to start watching a season?

If I wasn't so desperate I would love to start staight with Het Volk.

Bang, right into proper, proper racing.

Just happen to be reviewing the 2008 edition, won by Phil Gil
and boy, that was a proper race.
Attacked with 49km to go and chased all the way by a small group,
    including Cancellara, Hushovd and Nuyens.

Watching past races is my off season saver, but I'm still pretty
    desperate for Qatar.

    Any stand-out past races that'd you'd recommend?

I shall have to give it some thought.
I presume you mean Spring stuff, as opposed to the soft Summer stage stuff?
As I say, the 2008 HV was a text book attack, bridge across to team mate, use him, then blow 'em away, masterclass.

Off the top of my head, 2 other stand out races from Spring 2008 were Sylvain Chavanel's wins in the Brabantse Pijl and Dwars door Vlaanderen.
Both long range attacks and holding off of the marauding hoards.

No I can go for stage races too.

    Just individual stages.

That epic giro one this year is still lodged in my memory just for being so enormous > and nibs making a good job or making it exciting.

Which was the great stage with Savodelli and Rujano and Di Luca with all the dirt roads?

The best thing about the off-season is it seems to be an off-season for the trolls on this forum too .. I come in here to check out news and gossip during the off-season and avoid once the racing starts!

Why not go a whole lot better and come and join us and Wiggins at this coming year’s edition of this http://www.steephill.tv/2011/volta-ao-a ... /stage-03/ We take in various starts a finishes of the Tour and do our own training rides set around the Tour.
The weather is some of the Best in Europe in February, cheap digs, flights, food, and drink. Try the 18km Monchique (Foia 902m) climb, lots of other terrain and very quiet roads.
Tony Martin won last year and you can get right up close and personal with the stars.
