Updating an old road bike

Hi everyone,
I've got an old equipe that I've brought back to life but would like to have a few more creature comforts in so much as more modern design brake levers etc. I'm not too worried about the shifters on the down tube but would like to change the brake levers (which have the horizontal levers on them as well) to a more modern brake lever with the rubber tops etc for a bit more comfort.
Also where could I get a reasonably prices new front wheel for this bike?
Is it ok to wrap the brake cables under the bar wrap as modern road bikes have without too much problem? Also is there more modern design rear mech that I can swap out the shimano SIS mech for as a straight swap?
Thanks for any help.

Any shimano rear gear will be ok - such as sora.0 -
Ahh ok thanks. How does the cable route into the lever on these?
Cheers

I'm pretty sure its under the bar tape - give them a call - I've always found them most helpful.0

Most brake levers have the cable routed under the bar tape since about the mid-80sMake mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0
