drilled hole rim wear indicator

Dumb question - but ,,

I get it when there's a line milled the whole way round a rim - line disappears = rim worn out. but on my cheapy R500s all there is is a hole drilled right through the rim from the start, so what am I looking for? - they've got about 3K on so I expect its time to say goodbye

I don't know about those rims and the hole but I'd expect a heck of a lot more miles than 3000 out of a set of wheels. I did nearly 10,000 last year on a cheap set of mavics and honestly the rims don't even look worn yet. The hubs however are had it.

I'd be thinking about new tyres at 3k but like the guy above i'd want at least 10k out of my rims

The hole that goes all the way through is I think for drainage. Assuming that is you park the bike with the holes at the bottom after a wet ride (That's what I do with my RS10's anyway)

I'll be looking for a wear indicator tonight!

Well I finally got round to looking for the wear indicators last night. EEK! They are barely there at all. I'm going to have a go at the rims with the calipers tonight, see what thickness they actually measure.

They have only done 3000 miles, admittedly a lot of them in crappy conditions, but I don't do a lot of braking.

Should I be expecting to have to replace rims that soon? What would a wheelbuilder charge? Am I going to be looking at junking otherwise pristine wheels cos it's cheaper to simply replace them???

Should I be looking for softer brake pads??

Oooh I'm on 2nd hand R500s I've no idea what the wear indicator looks like
"The hollow on the opposite side to the valve hole is an indicator for the amount of
rim wear. If this hollow can no longer be seen, stop using the rim."
I'm struggling to work out where this is supposed to be. Radially opposite? Or in the rim wall adjacent to the valve hole?

FWIW I still commute on some Mavic MA2s on RSX hubs that are 20 years old.

Diametrically opposite the valve hole, ie the opposite side of the wheel. Hard to make out on mine whether there's meant to be one on each side at the same point; I can only see the faintest trace of one.

Where the back one has gone is a mystery; I hardly ever use the back brake.

OK, had a better look by daylight today. Cleaning the rims also helps a lot. The rear ones are still very visible, so plenty of wear left. The fronts are just about visible so I'm not panicking any more, but I think I'll be looking for some softer brake pads (still on the originals that came with the Shimano BR450's)
