Shimano IceTek RT86 6 Bolt Rotors

Getting ready to fit my RT86 6bolt rotors but I have a question about the fixing plate.
As I'm not using the bolts that came with the rotors, my bolts have a rounded head not the triangular head of the Shimano Bolts. Should I still use the fixing plate?
I really cant see what the purpose of the fixing plate is? I've trial fitted one but it looks odd with the fixing plate and I prefer the looks without the plate.

Fixing Plate installed
No Fixing Plate

Fixning plate is to stop the bolts wearing/grinding into the soft alu spindle I think.
Basically a big washer.
Looks better with it on anyway!0 -
Have gone with the fixing plate, I hadn't thought of it acting like a big washer to help protect the aluminiuim
