I am currently running a 9 speed 105 cassette, which needs changing. I've got a few hills to climb in the near future, so I'm aiming on putting on a 12 - 27 (or similar). I'm sure the Ultegra will fit OK (?), but are there any other options out there for me to look at?

cheers

  • Ultegra will be OK, but can you find 9 speed ultegra?

Best option is going for 9 speed Tiagra, they're good quality and you can get a 12-28, I reckon

I've had a quick search - can get a 12-27 ultegra OK, but tiagra only go to 25, and SRAM (will they fit OK?) go to 26.

can I just remove the 16 cog (which is the knackered one) in the current cassette, pop a 27 on the end instead and change the chain? WIll that work OK? (and will I be able to buy just a 27)

i've not done this before, you see......

    cheers

Yes and no... it's almost impossible to find single sprockets and yes, you can mix and match sprockets, provided you use the right spacers and provided the cogs come as singles, as often the big ones are bunched up as groups of 2-4.
Chain reaction says the 12-27 will be in stock on the first of December... how about giving them a call?
SRAM and Shimano are interchangeable, so if you find SRAM 9, then go for it. I've seen 9 speed Ultegra at 40 pounds... seems pretty good value to me

All the Shimano cassettes I've ever played with have the 3 biggest sprockets mounted together on a carrier. The next few are serarate with plastic spacers, then the smallest 3 or so are separate but have the (metal) spacer built in. So you can mix and match a bit, but not as much as you'd like.

any Sram or Shimano cassette will fit.

On the low end cassettes, with separate sprockets, you can swap the sprockets.

On cassettes with a spider system - 105, Ultegra et al - you can't swap the sprockets that are mounted to the spider.
