Omg carbon crack (madone).. would love some advice
So... omg
Trek Madone 2008 5.5 Pro
was just cleaning my bike.. had the bike upside down.. and i have found a crack!!
omg
This is what the bike looks like

pictures below of the crack:

http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a44 ... ne2001.jpg
im hoping people can picture where im looking at from the pics.. (frames upside down, looking down the fork and behind the front brake) the bike has like a carbon collar seated inbetween the frame and fork and this is what has cracked, i dont know what its actually attached to, if i apply a tiny bit of force it really just feels like a collar ready to fall off in two halves.
So unsurprisingly.. my quesiton for you guys is.. does my frame need binned? im trying to calm myself down with the hope that these collars are possibly replaceable and this is a common thing and.. someones going to go 'oh, this happened to me, speak to trek they have loads and will ship you one for £40 or something'
... im worried to say the least, no sleep for me tonight... id really appreciate it if anybody could offer any advice? will be taking it to the local to get advice tomorrow.

The cracked part is a component on the fork, not your frame.
Assuming you did not crash the bike (and the frame itself is unscratched), the frame should be OK. Just the fork (and possibly the Cane Creek IS2 integrated headset) need to be replaced or repaired.0 -
thanks for the quick/informative reply!
bike hasnt been crashed. frame is unscratched.
so if this bit is cracked is it the whole fork that needs replaced or is it possible to get the collar separate? can it be repaired?
if the fork has to be replaced what are the chances of being able to find the same fork in the same colour?
any idea of cost?
whats the best course of action?
where do i even start about getting a new fork or getting it repaired
apologies for all the questions but ive never been in this situation before and its new to me and im still trying to calm down since i noticed it lol
thanks for your post!0 -
If you want to have a replacement part with the identical paint, you will need to work with your Trek dealer to see if they can get an identical replacement for you.
All the forks I've seen are single-piece replacements.. I don't know if Trek actually has that shroud as a separate replaceable piece, but it couldn't hurt to ask your local Trek dealer. I would guess most likely you would have to replace the entire fork.
The other thing is that generic forks have steerers that have a uniform diameter (such as 1.125-inch). That fork on your trek has steerer tube with two diameters-- 1.125-inch diameter at the top and 1.5-inch diameter at the crown, like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2011-Trek-Madon ... 500wt_1174
If you can find a generic fork with those diameters (I don't think I've seen any), it will work. But the contours where it meets up with the frame's head tube probably won't match, so it probably won't look pretty.
Your best bet would be to work with your Trek dealer to track down a replacement.0 -
many thanks for the advice, where would i be without this forum... really just shows the awesome platform it provides to communicate with others and share knowledge.
took it to my local today, phoned trek straight away like they had it on speed dial... took photos and sent them.
shops in the middle of a relocation but will have an answer middle end of next week.
options are
possible replacement of shroud
replacement of fork
or leave it, although its cracked through, possibility the whole shroud is just for aesthetics, to my surprise super glue was mentioned
whether a replacement part will be same colour or style ill have to wait and see0 -
thanks john! i think youve just described what ive literally just found out... took the fork off and yeah its just a little carbon thing and as you say carries no load but does tidy up the fork soo hopefully it just stays on!
this forums the bomb... i want more problems to problem solve now! ill know where to come to anyway.
thanks everyone.0 -
im to get back to my local bike shop middle/end of next week. will be interesting to see what trek have to say on the matter... will they say i need a new fork or something lols.. let you know0

I think you will find that it is just a plastic cover to neaten things up. A friend as just bought a Madone and we were discussing the very same only the other day.
Not a very nice feature on these frames.Pegoretti

Advice I received regarding a crack in a carbon frame/forks from a top dog in carbon repair:
Tap the area with something metal like a screwdriver for instance and listen for the tone it makes
On a normal, undamaged component, it will sound like tapping a kitchen work top (good times)
If the carbon fibre has started to delaminate (bad times) it will sound dull like you're tapping your floor carpet
To make carbon components feel smooth they tend to have a thick clear coat on top
The crack may be in the clear coat and purely cosmetic, rather than a structual failure
Dunno if that is gonna help you but its good information from a good source0
