Shimano Flightdeck - what is that? I had a bit of discussion about this at the weekend, with one mate thinking it was Shimano's word for a gear shifter/lever and the other thinking it was a concept they had which was supposed to inform a Shimano computer as to what gear they are in... Any thoughts? Not that important just wondering....

Its a bike computer - but has the option to show what gear you're in using the compatable flightdeck shift lever units0

it's as above, you can also programme in so it shows the gear ratio you are changing into - bit hi-tech and not needed by me but it came with the bike0

It was a high tech bike computer before all the serous wireless kit came out. Because it linked in to the compatible shifters, it knew what gear you were in, so it could calculate virtual cadence by back-calculating from speed and gear selection.
Superseded by all the Garmin type stuff with cadence, HRM, GPS, altitude, temperature, power, FTSE 100 index, etc etc.0 -

The two rows of rings in the middle represent the chainset and cassette, wire it up and the cogs you are on show as solid black ovals. The system allowed you a visible representation of the gears on your computer.0 -
As above, bike computer. Love mine as it stops me looking down to my gears when coming to a stop at lights etc....i look at the computer to see what gear i'm in.
The way it works out cadence is its flaw though as you can be coasting downhill not pedaling, but it'll still work out a cadence because of gear and speed....0 -

Apparently they had a lot more features planned, but only a couple of prototypes survive:
