Can anyone shine any light on whether you can service or replace the bearings on
this particular model? i had the pre recall ones prior to these and they came apart no
problem (hence the recall) but looking at these and having a half hearted go they look pretty
solid/fixed. The collar part looks to have a four recess's for what could be a purpose tool?

The reason i want them apart is the bearings on the left hand one feels like metal filings are in them!

Any info would be gratefully recieved
Thanks in advance

Wrap something around the body and hold in a vice. Use a strap-wrench around the spindle housing and they should come undone. Make sure you unscrew in the right direction as they'll be handed.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Ive had my post recall Ti Ulteam pedals apart, i made a split sleeve out of a bit of steel tube that luckily happened to be a perfect fit around the retainer, dont try just holding it a vice without a sleeve as you will crush it and it will be scrap, having clamped it firmly in the vice i used a big adjustable spanner with some rubber pads to unscrew the pedal body, it needs a fair old heft to break the threadlock used to stop them unscrewing themselves, once apart youve got a bearing race at the crank end, retained by a C clip that can be a tricky little sod to get off, so be careful not to lose that, and a needle roller bearing at the other end, when you reassemble remember to put some medium strength threadlock in the threads to stop them coming apart, because as you know some of these pedals had a problem whereby they unscrewed themselves and were subject to a recall.
  • Thanks for the quick replies guys.

I managed to get it undone (vice, brute force applied gently?? and small amount of ignorance) c clip was a tricky little fella too but once i drifted the bearing off the spindle a clean and regrease and drifted back on its still not quite smooth. I was hoping it was just dirt and grit but think its a within the bearing which is a shame! i hate knockin s**t out of my own things dont mind in work stuff!

Next step buy a new bearing!

'Ketteringboy' or 'Monty dog' did you have them apart for bearing replacement or refurb and if so were they ok after??ie butterly smooth and pedal life prolonged?
  • The reason i took mine apart was the bearing race on the LH pedal had come loose on the spindle, perhaps the interference fit wasnt as good as it should be, and gave about .75 mm of side play, so to prevent it wearing the softer Ti spindle, i got it off put some Loctite retainer on it and its been ok since (2000miles), RH pedal has been fine over 10,000 miles.
