TT tyre vs old tyre

Evening all
I noticed my old tyres wearing significantly after a mere 30mins on my new TT today. 'So buy a proper trainer tyre" I hear you cry.
"Well," says I, "the current tyres are pretty old anyway so I'm thinking of just getting a new road tyre (which i ll need soon anyway) and using on of the worn tyres on the trainer." Is this a good option or are the Trainer tyres a significant improvement?
