    What bike is it.
How many gears do you have at the moment.

  • 22" GT frame. Got 26 " wheels currently with 7 speed cassette but shifters are for 8 speed.

You need an eight speed cassette then (and chain). Pretty much any freehub will be compatible, so just a matter of picking some wheels.
How much do you want to pay.

  • Well bike was only £60 from ebay so did not want to spend to much or might as well of bought a new bike. Maybe £20-£30 for the pair of wheels and hub on there own. Then i have seen cassette at about £20 or less. Do you know what the numbers are about with cassettes. They say sometimes 11-30 or others.

11-30 is the number of teeth on the smallest and largest cogs. Larger number makes it easier to pedal.
At that price you will probably need to go second hand on Ebay or something.
Do you need disc or rim brakes?

  • Rim. The frame does not have the conections for disc. Do I need a specific size to fit on an 8 speed cassette.

Nope, standard freewheel fits 7, 8 or 9 speed cassette.
What you want is something like this

Just make sure whatever wheels you get the rear has a freehub. Some older or very basic ones take have a screw on freewheel - normally in 5,6 or 7 speed. As long as you aim for 8 speed you will be fine.
