I'm looking to got some mudguards for my 20 year old Peugeot Performance 2000 road bike (steel frame) running 25c tyres.

I've heard good things about the Crud Roadracer Mk2 guards and also the Raceblades.

Does anyone know whether either of these will work with a bike of this age? If so, any recommendations?

Thanks

  • Cruds may work but they could be tight on 25 tyres the others should be ok as well assuming you have eyelets, the geo of roadframes in regards to the rear triangle and forks have not changed that much and most kits can be shaped to fit
  • That was quick! Thanks.

I liked the look of the Cruds as they look to give the most coverage and protection.

Things will be tight on the front wheel as I've got 10mm max clearance. Presumably they could be doctored to fit?
  • Yep the can be, have a look on the website as you will find some hints and tips which they no doubt may have already covered with an older frame.

Like I said though they can be tight on 25 c tyres and by that I mean they rub heavily so if you are nervous drop them an e-mail they are normally pretty helpfull.

For the Cruds, depends on how much clearance you have between the top of the tyre and under the brake caliper - minimum gap needed is 4mm.
If you can fit them, the Cruds are better as they have better coverage, but are less easy to whip on an off.

Raceblades are a lot easier to fitar clearance isn't an issue as they don't pass under the caliper. They use rubber straps around the fork blade / seat stay but give a lot less coverage - might keep your bum dry by the rider behind will still get a face-full of spray.

With both apply protective tape to your paintwork as it gets scuffed at the mounting points.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I've used both and while the crudcatchers do give more coverage/protection, they can be a bit fiddly with 25mm tyres.
I've found that once you have adjusted the raceblades, they are easy to clip on/off in a few minutes.

SKS have anounced a raceblade long, that provides more coverage, while dealing with limited clearance at the brake calipers. Haven't seen any yet, but should be worth a look.

Yes, I am also waiting for the new Raceblades. I have the cruds but my 3 road bikes all have minimal clearance and preclude 25mm's and cruds, which is a shame.
  • I've just got some cruds. Haven't actually fitted them yet, but I have noticed that I do have insufficient clearance between the frame/seat stays and tyre. Crud do suggest a solution to this i.e. sawing a bit of the mudguard off!

If there is insufficient clearance for the front wheel however they admit that the mudguards wont work.

They do say that they will work with any width of road bike tyre however.

The video tutorials on their website are quite good.

Im a big fan of cruds but recently fitted a pair of sks chromoplastic guards as clearances allowed. I much prefer the sks as they are more sturdy and offer better coverage. I can only imagine the new sks will be as good but I couldnt wait any longer

Which mudguards do you recommend I use on my CAAD9 with Gatorskin 23c? I use it EVERYDAY for commuting in London, 20 km each way. My CAAD9 doesn't have eyelets. Clearance is tight, but as all road bikes.

Function (don't want to get wet), stability (once on the bike they need to stay on the bike), robustness (London roads are full of potholes, they need to sustain some little abuse even though I really look after my bike) are of primary importance.
Aesthetics, weight, time required to install, and price are secondary,

    Thanks for your inptut!
  • Do have a look at the crud website. They have some good videos on there of the mudguards, fitting, safety testing etc.
  • just fitted a pair of cruds to my Cannondale - fairly tight even with 23" tyres but look the part and hopefully will keep most of the water/mud off. Took me around 45 minutes. Some deals on ebay - I guess from people who bought them and who don't have enough clearance.
