Should I buy Shimano 105 double compact over tiagra ?

I got my carbonzone 54cm frame, forks and headset about 3 weeks ago . I got a new lightweight alloy stem to replace the piece of junk id been using on my previous 56cm bike and LBS guy has fitted my handbuilt mavics with open pro rims , 170mm shimano tiagra compact double cranks and hooked the bike up just beautifully.

The 56cm bike feels like a boat anchor compared to the carbon bike and I am very very pleased with my new build. Im going to make improvements over time and Id been looking at the 170mm Shimano 105 compact double crank. Compared to the Tiagra, would the 105 be a noticeable step up in quality and weight reduction, or more of a sideways manoeuvre ?

The '105 chainset is really heavy. Go for Ultegra if you want to stick with Shimano. IMHO the chainset is the worst part of the 105 groupset
  • Chain reaction are selling ultegra chainset quite cheap. Also they have some good deals on FSA crankset with carbon cranks which I'd assume to be even lighter.

  • Yeah the 105 chainset is still a bit of a lump, not much of an improvement. I too have been using fsa chainsets for several years now, because you can usually pick up a great deal on them. I got a gossamer pro (ultegra ish level) - for £60 last year in the sales. Cancellara used to use this chainset when at csc because it is so stiff...and if its good enough for him its good enough for me!

would the fsa offer noticeable weight reduction ?
  • No noticable difference between Tiagra and 105 IMHO. As already said, if you're going to upgrade Ultegra would be the way to go.
  • 105 is probly no improvement over the Tiagra, and it's not the lightest but i dont think it deserves to be called REALLY heavy

I'm currently looking at swaping out my 105 for an FSA slk light or something similar.
  • Including the BB the weights are: 105 - 1188g, fsa gossamer - 905g, ultegra - 785g. Therefore fsa i think represents the best value for money unless you can get a really good deal on ultegra.

the image i posted shows 721g does that mean the 105 bb weighs 467g, now that is heavy  or the pic could be faked.
  • If you can stretch the budget, then this might be the one to choose: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=28258

Went with this one my self, and I'm certainly not disappointed, for the sale price you'll struggle to find lighter
