Hi, i have some fox vanilla r forks, from 2009, and noticed a while ago that one of the dropouts had a small chip in it, like it had been dropped and damaged.
more recently i noticed it had started to 'erode' away, and is really pitted! what can possibly be causing this? to my knowledge i havnt damaged them, so it is a really bizarre problem!
thanks

Is it where the axle or QR contacts?0

its on the inside, where the axel meets it0

Sounds quite normal, most paint chips here. Pitting sounds a little excessive, so try a thin coat of clear lacquer.0

when i say chip, i mean the actual aluminium is chipped, and badly pitted! i will try and put a photo up tomorrow to clarify!0

road salt made my engine cases erode like that, once it started it didn,t matter what i tried to stop it i couldn,t, but it was only where the paint coat was scratched around the bolts0

Aluminium will corrode when in contact with steel in damp and/or salty environments.I don't do smileys.

i thought alu corrodes as much to form a white alu oxide; which then protects from further erosion. Essentially it doesn't rust away like steel/iron.Trek Remedy 7

The forks legs are magnesium, but that is definitely road salt damage as above. I have seen magnesium fork braces eroded all the way through!
The dropout may have weakened, hard to recommend to keep riding them. but if you do, clean the area of salt, and coat it in lacquer.0 -

What kind of lacquer do you recommend? I have few paint chips on my Trance on the underside from rock strikes, and planning to ride it in the winter. Having seen this, I want to protect it from salt damage.A much loved, Giant Trance X3 20100 -
For frames I'd use a strip of clear helitape to protect the whole tube.0

It may not be something you'd consider but last year, whilst getting my fork serviced by Mojo, I had them replace the lowers with qr15 versions. It's not cheap but it would be significantly cheaper to replace the lowers than buy new forks if you need to replace. Fitting was free with the service.
Otherwise, if you are technically proficient (or just willing to have a go!) I have a spare qr float 32 lowers (white) if you want to make me an offer - just sitting in a drawer in the garage. Just pm me and I can send pics, etc.

thanks for the advice everyone, much appreciated.
james, would float 32 lowers be compatible with my vanilla r forks?
thanks0 -
I had a look at the Mojo site and they only seem to provide a specific lower for the F-series forks, so I would assume that would but it would be worth ringing them to check before blowing any money...
Here is a link to their web store:

For info my forks are the 2009 model (float 32 rl)...
If you are located around the Midlands you are welcome to pop over and compare them if you prefer.
