Welding tags onto frame?

I got the frame second hand and before I strip and repaint at work was going to get our engineering section to weld some tags onto the frame for a dropper seatpost cable.
Would this weaken the frame? we weld ally using a tig set

All welds weaken the base material slightly (hence why most cracks start in the parent material at the edge of the weld!), but if done properly with minimum heat build you should be fine, don't attche them at the highest stressed areas (by the main frame joints) but try and keep them at leat 50mm away from the existing joints.

Thought as much, had a chat with our best welder and he says no problem really as long as we stay away from the joint just as you have said.

Why not use some form of adhesive? That way no risk from weldingFocus Cayo Pro

Yes, I'd use an epoxy glue for this.0

aso the areas away from the welds are generally the thinner walled areas due to the butting.0

Steel frame? if so why not braze it on?0

It's an ally frame and I have used the stick on cable guides, which worked but came off after a short period and before you say it I cleaned the frame with isopropanol first.0

Tried that and it just pulls the other cables with it when it's down.0 -
Carbon frames are glued with epoxy resin - is powerful stuff. Some alloy frames need post weld heat treating.0

Are we talking Araldite or something stronger? your swaying me away from welding.0 -
How about these M Part fork hose guides might be the thing never tried them for what you want but might be worth a try before you get the TIG welder out http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=19159Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0

Could try these
Problem Solvers Backstop
I used one on my Identiti Dr Jekyll frame to add a cable stop for a top pull front mech.

Thought about them and as my top tube isn't round would be a pain.
I may go with the velcro cable guides yet, as you guys have put me off welding onto the frame.
Cheers guys0 -
A properly executed weld will be fine, but so would epoxy with less risk......

I used this stuff to glue a cracked motorbike crankcase together. Get it right first time because it aint coming off. http://www.amazon.co.uk/ARALDITE-RAPID-STEEL-ADHESIVE-STRONG/dp/B000WA9QIU/ref=pd_sim_kh3Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0

Fasten it to the points on the frame where there are already cable guides?
Works fine on my Cotic...0
