Noise on revolution... freewheel made of cheese?

Hi all,

My bike has developed an awful noise when climbing... I thought it might be the BB but I thought I would check the freewheel on the hub. I found this... Could it be this that is causing the noise?

Could be. Certainly looks like it's made of cheese. Edam possibly.

Cheers... bike is only about 3 months old, done about 1200 miles max. I've got Etape Cymru on Sunday so need to get it sorted
  • An awful noise when climbing? What sort of noise? If you jet wash the bike, you could have washed the grease out the hub. If the wheel bearings aren't under the correct tension they might be wearing. Or it could be the spokes need a tension, or....

TBH the the marks on the freehub body aren't likely to be responsible. These are normal, and something you'll find on most secondhand wheels. Granted it does look bad, but I would look at which cassette you use on that wheel as some cassettes don't damage your freehub as much as the one you have in your pics.

Cheers. The noise is a creaking and knocking only under load, sounds like a bearing issue. I've swapped my rear wheel for another and it isn't making the noise now... Do you think it could be the bearings in the hub though?

Was the cassette lock ring tight enough? That would explain the excessive notches on the freewheel body.

I've had a big creaking from the rear (oooooeeeerrrrr) lately - dry spoke nipples cured with liberal application of oil.

    Worth a go if anything.

Just been out and tested another wheel on the rear and did a 20% climb, not a single noise. So I think I can rule out the BB.

I don't power wash the bike... the noise is a definate dry creak, almost like it could be a crack in the frame (But I know it isn't that as the different rear wheel has proven).

I apologize in advance if this was the first thing you checked, but have you tried lubricating the chain? I've had one (a Shimano, as I recall) that signalled it was getting dry with a creaking/crunching noise that sounded like a terminal case. WD40 for a quck fix, hot wax for the longer term (does anyone else still do this?)

Chain was lubed before the ride and with the new wheel it ain't making the noise...

It's hugely unlikely to be the cause of your issues. That is caused by a cheap cassette on a soft alloy freehub body.

If a wheel swap fixed it then it's probably the hub bearings or spokes etc.

Cassette is a 105 cassette... I think it is a bearing issue within the freehub after speaking to my LBS.

Turns out that the bearings in the freehub were knackered and needed replacing and also the bearings in the hub needed cleaning up and regreasing. Ended up costing £33 at LBS for a full hub service and new bearings :)
  • You didn't buy it secondhand off Speedking did you??

No, the wheels came new on the brand new bike.

To be honest... it hasn't stopped raining since I bought the bike and I have been riding it in very heavy rain. I know it is no excuse but it hasn't been pampered.

It feels great again now though and helped me fly round the Etape Cymru... once I found the right route ;)
