You could do worse than take advantage of the big discounts at Planet X. Currently offering a half zip long sleeved merino base layer at 19.99 ( down from £47).

The round-neck equivalent is on offer at £17.99.

I ordered a short sleeve version a month or so back and have been very happy with it.0 -
I think this one from Altura is excellent value at just over your budget:

I reckon I get more wear of this base layer than any other item (with the exception of my fave shorts).0 -
I have one of the altura ones and it's excellent, nice compression and very odd to feel when you take it off when the outside is wet to touch but not the inside.0

+1 for planet X in black.
The white tops apparently smell of wet dog!0 -
Whilst not cycling specific, I picked up an Under Armour Cold Gear long sleeve mock last weekend. The label says for use under 12 degrees.
£21.99 on TK Maxx, there about £70.00 on the UA website. Only had white though!Trek 1.1c (2012) - For commuting
Trek Madone 5.5c (2010) - For pleasure http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o62 ... G_0413.jpg0 -
As per Nick above, I think the UA Cold Gear base layers are excellent for cycling. They are quite long and skin tight, with sleeves that reach the end of your wrists and are VERY comfortable and warm, even when wet (if you use a windproof outer shell).
I just bought a mock neck one from kickbacksports for £24 delivered. Superb value. In black too!

Not having an Aldi near me - I tend to go to Sports Direct for base layers - cheap as chips for Nike/Puma stuff (and others) http://www.sportsdirect.com/mens/mens-base-layerhttp://www.georgesfoundation.org
