Oh jeebies, what have I done!

Some of ou may have read my other posts recently, but for those that haven't, I've decided to treat myself to a new machine, be it road or hybrid (which ever suits me best on my ride this week) after clocking the last 6+ months on my old MTB. I thought it was best I set myself a target.....initially I thought to aim at the century by this time next year.....I've chosen against that for now.
I've just registered interest for myself in next years London to Brighton. Ok, not a massive distance by some comparison to you guys, but for little old me currently rattling off 12 miles a time, having spent years off a bike previously, it's quite a milestone!
Any advice/tips?

Just the obvious - get out and ride!0

Little and often - try to ride every other day to begin with and you'll find what was difficult starts to get easier - push a bit further on the good days and back off when your feeling tired. Keep it up over the winter, build some miles in the spring and you'll have no problem0

+1. No better training. When I started riding again the 3 miles to work killed me. After even just a few days it got easier. There is however no point in buying a phat bike and trying to do 93 miles this weekend. You won't be thankful for a ride like that. I went from 3 to 6 to 12 to 20 or so quite easily inside a couple of months. Not bad for a fat bus driver on a Carrera.

Don't know how far the ride is but as said you've got plenty of time to build up and have tha added benefit of loosing some weight which will make things easier.
Shorter nights now may make the logistics of longer rides a tad harder but go for it, and good luck.

I like to think that the last 6 months have at least started to build me up. First ride in ages was 10 miles. Took me an hour and was dead on my feet to the point of hardly being able to walk to the front door after putting the bike in the garage. The last ride was just shy of 12 miles, but when I got home it felt like I'd just ridden up the road. Hoping the new whip will help rattle the miles out without thinking so hard about the next hill......but we'll see. I've still got 6 months eh!2015 Ridley Fenix 105

Yeah as others have said just build up slow and you'll be fine. My dad did L2B this year and he's 18 stone and hardly does any riding. The spectacle of the event will help you carry on. I've been doing timetrialing for the last 3 months and havn't done a ride above 35 miles in months.
Did a few 100-130 miles sportives in the spring without much issue but no distance training since then, got a 100 mile on Saturday! Just have to remember to slow my pace down...can;t maintain 21MPH over a 100! But got a feeling it might hurt due to no distance training.
Anyway I have digressed. You should be aiming to be able to complete a few 40 mile rides by the time you get to the l2b (54 miles) and on the day you'll be super fine!0 -
London to Brighton is easy there is more chance of you crashing than not making it due to fitness. There are so many people the miles will just disapear and you will be there before you know it.0

I did the L2B last year in June - picked up my bike in march after not having rid for 10 years - first day out i struggled to turn the pedals - just stuck at at - and slowly built up the distances and didn't once do more than a 40 mile ride before L2B and i found it a breeze.
