Thinking about doing this with my bikes, 1 bike has a 50/34 with 16-27 ultegra cassette, whilst my other bike has 39/53 with 12-25 Rival cassette, both 10speed also. Just wondering how difficult it is to swap the cassettes? Cheers folks...

  • Not hard to change a cassette.. To remove a cassette you use a chain whip to hold the cassette stationary while using your other hand to loosen the cassette lockring using a lockring tool and adjustable wrench. To put the cassette onto the wheel, you simply stack the cassette onto the freehub body then use that lockring tool and adjustable wrench to torque it tight. Done.

BUT, what you might need to do is change the length of your chain, if your cassette's lowest cog size is significantly different.

Also, how many miles have you done on each bike?? Or more importantly the chains that are on there?? If you've done 1500-2000 miles on a chain then it's probably nailed and if it's really bad it might have started to wear the cassette as well.

Not saying it won't be fine, but if the gears start to jump when you've swapped them over - it might mean the chain's need replacing too.

Are you OK at tuning gears?? As they'll probably need a tweak as well.
