Newbie with gear problems
hi all,
i have bought 2nd hand a usps trek with ulterga gear and the top 7/8 gears keep slipping, is it dead obvious what the problem is?
also my partner has a Cinelli willin with veloce, similar problems but gears 4/5,
perhaps were riding them wrong??
Had them both into lbs, and the dead helpful guy there says were not being patient enough (but did say the misses bike may need a new chain),
what do we try next, any advice welcome, cheers Dan

Plenty of things can cause chain-slip at the back.. Can be worn sprockets, can be a stretched chain, can be a bent derailleur hanger, can be problems with the shifter or cable run. or if the RD itself has problems.
- Check the derailleur hanger and make sure it's not bent.
- Check the cassette for wear.
- Check the chain for stretch.
- Make sure nothing is messing up the cable run (i.e. no busted plastic ferrules or dirt in the cable housings preventing clean shifts).
- Make sure nothing is gumming up the works inside your shifter's housing.
- Inspect your RD and make sure it looks OK.
I've gotten chain-slip associated with the rear mechanism twice, due to worn sprockets and stretched chain, after about 5000 miles each time. Replacing those two components fixed the problem for me in each instance.0 -
Thanks for the responce, please could you tell me how do you tell if your chain is stretched, the lbs guy said the Cinelli chain was about 80% worn.0

Sheldon Brown has an excellent section on chain and sprocket wear-and-tear: http://sheldonbrown.com/chains.html#wear
Includes photos of how worn chains and sprockets look like. Hope this helps.0 -
Thanks for the advice, i was just wondering if it was worth upgrding my gruop set on the trek ups bike or get a new bike. the frame is about 10 years old but as light as a feather.0

If you feel comfortable on that frame and it is still in good condition, no reason why you shouldn't upgrade the components to get as much out of it as you can. I'd go for it!
Could be a good learning experience for you to gain confidence at "wrenching" your own bike.0
