Just recently replaced chain and cassette, for the first 20 miles, all seemed well, but now i'm finding the chain slips when setting off/putting hard power down in the first 3 or 4 sprockets.

cassette WAS 11-25, have changed it to 12-25 (9 speed, shimano cassette)
chain has been replaced with Shimano chain, with a quicklink fitted instead of the rivet.

gear indexing is all fine. Note, i didnt change the cranks, which are a triple. I spend most of life in the middle ring (39). This morning, as an experiment, i did a lot of pulling away using the small chainwheel, and didnt experience slipping.

Time to change the crankset too?

  • Whatever it is, it's not the crankset.

You missed the spacer out when fitting the new cassette? (is it stuck to the back of the old one)

Is the new chain definitely 9 speed?

Unless your chainring is very worn (ie visibly shark finned teeth) I doubt it's the cause. If it is, you need only replace that ring.

the middle (39) chainring has teeth that look like piranha teeth, ie, sharp, thin, pointy. Have improvised for now by using the 30 and 50t rings and all works smoothly in those. As the chainset is super cheap budgety thing anyway, i'll replace the chainset for a double.
