Front mech problems after fitting new Shimano chainset

I have just fitted a new deore MTB chainset to my touring bike.
It has a 68MM bottom bracket and a band on front mech, so I fitted 2 spacers to the drive side and one to the non drive as per the instruction.
However I now cannot get the chain to shift up onto the big chainring, I have slide the mech down to the proper position, re-adjusted the cable and stop screws etc.
I am using a 10 speed Ultegra front mech if that makes any difference?
I am thinking of removing one of the drive side spacers and putting it on the non drive.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Is the new chainset hollowtech 2 or square taper? If square taper is the axle too long?0

I have removed one of the spacers from the drive side and it is fine now, with no noticable play in the bottom bracket area.0
