Hi, i am currently starting to have a go at downhill riding, iam now starting to small drop offs (2ft) but no jumping yet (thats work in progress). I developing my skills gradually so to progress to bigger drop off 4ft and jumps, i think iam going to need to up grade my rear shock. Currently a have a spicy 316 with float r rear shock 160mm, i am thinking of upgrading to a Fox dhx 4rc2 coil or a fox dhx 5.0 air but i dont know which to buy?

Advice would be greatly received

many thanks GJC

The Spicy is an all mountain bike, so four foot drops into a transition would not be a problem. If you are keen to upgrade then a RP23 boost valve might be a better option as the boost valve comes into it's own on bigger hits.

If the world was flat, I wouldn't be riding !
  • I did 3-4ft drop offs perfectly fine my old 2011 trek remedy 8 also managed jumps perfectly fine as long as your landing onto a transition rather than flat.

When you continualy bottom the shock out....then it's time to look at the RP23 BV or DHX Air !....untill then it should do if run at the right pressure and sag.

  • Im ~225lbs so around the 110kg mark and had no trouble, coil shocks are obviously better for the big hits but give it a try before you go spending any money on replacements :)

Had my shock set to 235psi with 20% sag and didnt bottom out at all while riding down Cwmcarn several weeks ago. Went down on a friends DH bike and it was smoother but then they can't ride up hills :)

Float R rear shocks aren't that good with heavier riders. What's compression and rebound tune on your shock? Mine was all set to medium and I had bad times with that shock set up, there is an option to revalve it properly to your correct weight and enjoy it without spending too much money.

I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though
