Aligning cleats correctly

I've bought some new shoes for my road bike. And am wondering if there's a correct way to make sure I've aligned the cleats correctly in the shoes.
btw I'm using "road" spds

sit on a table and dangle legs. align cleats forward, no matter which way the feet naturally point
