What a mess of a route, especially towards the end. For me a route that goes from place to place, or which runs around a circuit logically defined by the terrain, as the old one did, makes for a better race.

Now why oh why do they need such a long "Flat" run to the Finish again.
After the Paterberg it should be the Koppenberg which could be on the way to the Oudenaarde Finish if you don't cross the river and use the N60 road into Oudenaarde.

What's wrong with the flat finish?
  • We don't need another uphill sprint in the spring classics. Needs to be short enough to make attacks on the last climb tempting but long enough to ensure you have to be very stong to make them stick.

  • but the section from the very short (but painful) climb from the Paterberg back to Oudenaarde (via Avelgem) is very flat....

Of course the old course had a signiificantly downhill route from the Bosberg to the old finish line which certainly assisted breakaways.
