Can you please give me your recommendations for a replacement set of tyres to replace my Fire XC Pro folding 2.1's on my 'hopper for all year round general trail use that might also impove performance? Read good reports on Spesh Captains but not sure of their all round ability.

Cheers, Nick

  • Loved my Fires! But anything from Maxxis won't go wrong. The Ignitor makes a great dry tyre, highroller is the generic 'put on and forget all year round' circle of rubberness.

What surface do you ride on, that is 50% of your purchasing criteria, without knowing the surface recommendations will only be based on another riders preferance on their normal surface!

  • Everything from gritty trails to singletrack trails through woods more rocky/gritty sections around peaks hence all round requirement.

  • Sounds similar to my riding conditions - but also very dry here

I've gone for Nobby Nic on the front and Racing Ralph on the back. Gonna put them on today so will report back soon

  • Continental X-king rear and Mountain king front, both 2.2 folding, good grip and very fast rolling speed. Also cheap!

  • Why not just get another set of Fire XC pros? They might not be the most fashionable but they work, I've been running them for years as a front tyre and can't find anything better. I used to use the 1.8s which I found were ligher as well as better for deep mud and sand but have gone up to 2.1 lately as I kept getting pinch flats with the smaller size. I usually have one on the rear too but currently have a Bontrager Jones ACX 2.2 which I bought because it was in the sale at my LBS, it's a pretty good all rounder.

If you like Panaracer my mate swears by Trailrakers on his Trek Fuel, supposedly designed for British conditions.

So you are effectively recommending tyres you've never ridden which you bought based on someone else's recommendation.

My riding is mostly well drained soil with occasional muddy patches, I have a Schwalbe smart sam on the front which rolls well and once the bike is leaned over has quite knobbly shoulders, I have a fire XC on the rear for traction, works very well for me and worked OK at Cannock as well, my off was due to lack of talent not lack of grip!

I'm not recommending anything I'm telling the poster what I bought (recommended by nicklouse) for what sounds like similar riding conditions. ok?

  • Thanks for your suggestions. I like sound of High Rollers. Which ones are the best to go for what I am looking for? There seems to be lots of options!

Out of interest, still be interested in opinions of anyone running Spesh Captain Controls?

    Cheers

  • Had the Captains on Stumpy FSR the last few days. Lots of grip on the loose stuff & hard trails even at the back when out of the seat on very steep sections
