I've got an Orange Crush with Avid Elixir 5 brakes on. I've also got a 29er Trek Cobia with some Promax Hornets on. I've starting thinking that the Hornets need bleeding/tweeking or that they're juist a bit rubbish and won't actually give the braking I want, even when tweeked.

A bleed kit seems to be about £20 for the Promax and the Avid kit I have is not compatible at all, that's DOT 5.1 for a start.

I'm thinking for the sake of simplicity to put some Avid Elixirs on the 29er, can use same bleed kit, same pads etc.

So there's two options move the Elixir 5s onto the 29er and buy some thing maybe a bit better but still compatible for the Crush. The other thing to do is buy some new Elixirs (3s?) for the 29er.

Any thoughts? I've found the Elixir 5s to be ok for the Crush. They need re-centring every so often but that's easy to do.

I have Avid brakes on both although thats more by luck, I didnt intend on buying a 2nd bike with Avids.

However had I not I would have done for simplicity sake and additionally I love the Elixir range.

Await the barrage of "omgz u shud getz de formula brakes dey is da bestest eva" though ;)

Merlin have a nice deal on Aid Elixir R well worth splashing the cash. Good solid brakes though I have found the pads dont last very long only got 250 miles out of the originals. Replacd them with Superstar sintered and alls well.

edit: Just noticed they only have IS mount left you need to check your forks before you buy.

I saw the R's at Merlin earlier. I have post mount on the fork. Is the caliper completely different or is it just a case of changing the bracket?

On my Crush the calipers look identical it's only the black bracket they're on that looks different, so maybe I could buy the IS mount ones and get a post mount bracket for the front?

In my experience its just the mount bracket that is different but dont want to commit myself on that. Maybe ring Merlin on monday and have a chat they are usually pretty good on that sort of thing.

I agree - why not put Elixir 5's on both, cheaper to buy multipacks of pads, same bleedkit etc....
I have them with superstar sintered as stubs mentioned, top brakes - love em :)

On-one have them for £79.99 at mo, supplied with both types of mount brackets

Or you can buy them for £122 from Merlin here (with VIP discount), instead of £160 at OnOne.

Although they only have the 160/160 post mounts, but you could buy a larger rotor and adaptor.

I'd prefer black ones but if they're cheap who cares!

Although how do you get £122? I've registered and I get 10% discount which takes me to £130.......
