Where to apply helicopter tape
Looking at purchasing some helicopter tape to protect my Allez from the usual stone chips.
Where has everyone else fitted the tape?
I am thing the usual downtube because that's the most vulnerable part. also thought about the back end of the seat tube because there is minimal clearance between the frame and the tyre.
anywhere else?

Maybe just cover the whole bike?
Seriously though I'd just put some on the chainstay to protect it from the chain. I have a black bike so I put black electric tape on the frame under the cables to protect the frame from any rubbing.0 -
On top of the chain stay on the chain side to stop the chain bashing it. Also anywhere where cables make contact with the frame like the head tube. Move the handlebars left and right and see if the cables rub anywhere.
If you use a bike stand the cables can get trapped against the top tube and scratch the paint.0 -
Some people apply it to the outside face of their cranks to avoid unsightly rub.
Oh err missus

This about covers it (pun not intended!) - chainstay and anywhere where cables might rub.
Also, if you have any lights or computer bits on the bike - I have a rear light on the seatstay- helicopter tape under it's mounting, and the Garmin cadence sensor on the chainstay is again mounted over helicopter tape.
As for doing downtubes etc. - seems excessive - you're never going to be able to protect every square mm of the bike from chips, they happen. The idea (in my opinion) is to prevent rubbing away of paint in areas you can predict it will happen (i.e. cables etc.).
Once the heartache of the first chip, bash, scratch is done with, then you can get on with riding the bike and not worrying anymore.0 -
I just use Ducktape on my commuter bike, on the driveside DT and TT for resting against stuff, and on both fork blades.
Eventually it will get scratced, its only a Allez factory frame, not a work of art, ride and be dammned.0
