Pedal nightmare

Just took my new cannondale carbon synapse ultegra for it's first run and within 2 miles the pedal sheered off, no real way I could have cross threaded as the pedal went on fine. Just tried a different pedal which went on again with no worries. And now that is stuck in the crank... Any ideas of how to get it off tried real long Allen key along with spanner and it's not budging?

I can't visualise what has broken. The pedal has "sheared off"? Do you mean the pedal axle is broken through, or it has undone and fallen out?
If you managed to fit another pedal, I guess the threads in the crank are still ok. To remove a pedal, use a long pedal spanner (at least as long as the crank), and configure it so you can push down hard on both. Make sure you're turning the right way.0 -
The pedal 'undid and fell off' I look at both crank thread and pedal thread and there was some metal residue like filed inside the threads of each. Tried out other pedal to end of thread and all ok until trying to get it out. Housemate and I with spanner and Allen key combo and nothing is budging it. Guess I'll have to take it to local shop?0

Sounds to me like you had them both cross threaded on the wrong side.0

With look or similar pedals this would have the pedals facing the wrong way......0 -

Sure I remember a post on here from somebody who had done exactly that....... :!:0 -
You need big lever - a decent pedal wrench is a cheap useful investment - and for really stubborn ones a couple of feet of pipe that fits over the end.
There's another thread on here on a similar subject - you can try WD40 and heat etc. and it should shift.
You also want to grease the pedals before you install them but it's a bit late for that.I'm left handed, if that matters.0 -
You are award of the fact that one pedal has a left hand thread and the other a right hand thread. There is no way that you should be able to screw the wrong pedal in. If you have managed it through brute force i would suggest that you are going to need some new cranks.0

Yep, there is no way the wrong pedals went on as they came straight of my old bike... And the pedal that is now stuck on from my house mates bike.. He's not too happy either!0

The left hand pedal is a reverse thread. I find it easier to work on the opposite side of the bike to the pedal. To undo, both pedals release by turning towards the back of the bike in an upwards direction. Sometimes the pedal spanner may need to be 'hit' a couple of times to free off a stuck pedal but only if the spanner is a good fit on the pedal. Watch your knuckles on the chainrings, a thick cloth over them stops painful slip injuries.0

Struggling to picture this one myself
I've never had a pedal undo and I don't do them up much more than finger tight. It does sound like it was cross-threaded though and metal debris is what's locking the other one you tried. Not sure much else you can do other than use more grunt (pipe over allen key etc.). One tip is make sure the chain is on the outer ring, just in case your hand slips... Could also try taking the crank off to and clamping it in a vice, might be easier to get the leverage.

If it really won't come out and the crank is aluminium you could try warming the crank around the pedal axle with a hot air gun (electric paint stripper!). Don't do this with a carbon crank!
You will still need the pedal spanner and a decent lever. If it gets to this stage the crank could be dead. Otherwise get the thread cleaned out with the proper tap and grease before refitting. If it won't come out buy your mate a new pair of pedals and fit his other one to your bike.0 -
If you need to start smacking stuff around, go and get a 15mm spanner from the local Halfords and smack it with a lump hammer - the lump is less likely to bounce back and hit you then a common and garden hammer and the smack will loosen things off easier.
It's also worth an extra 5 comedy points.
I suggest a 15mm spanner because they are cheaper and fit just as well and you can smack it to bits and then throw it in next door's garden.0
