TT shifter compatibility question
hi,
I am assembling a time trial bike. So far, I have accrued the following drivetrain parts:
Shimano 9-speed bar end shifters
Campag 10-speed chain set
Campag 10-speed front derailler
Campag 10-speed rear derailler
What I need to know is....what is the easiest way to rig this lot together into a useable combination? I haven't purchased a wheel set yet, so could go for shimano or campag cassette and I guess using a shift mate is an option.
If I went for shimano 9 speed cassette/wheels would the fact that it is working with campag deraillers matter? Or would I be better going for campag wheels/cassette and using a shift mate?
Thanks for all input,
C.

IIRC, the 9 speed Shimano shifters can run in 'friction' mode.
If so, you may be ok, but they wont 'index' with Campag.
This really is a bit messy... All 9's and 10's, Campag and Shimano...
10 speed chains are a different pitch to 9 speed, so I can't say how your rear changes will work, if you choose 9 speed, especially if you choose Shimano 9 speed.
Maybe you'll need a bit more than Shift Mate... More like a miracle!...Start with a budget, finish with a mortgage!0 -
So far you are ok if you use the shifters in friction mode. I would advise using a 10sp cassette and chain to keep things working ok.
TBH though 105 bar end shifters in 10sp are pretty cheapNorfolk, who nicked all the hills?

Wrong, the chain "pitch" is identical to all modrn chains. Whats different is the outside width which is of course narrower than 9sp, although the inside widht is the same.
The spacing of the cassette cogs is on course less on 10sp than 9sp - I assume that's what you mean.
I'd say that, for a TT bike then yes, the shifters might work - but I don't know what the overall cable pull for Shimano bar-end shifers from 1-9 is compared to that required to move the campag 10sp mech it's full travel.
I'd suggest looking on the TT or Tri fora for what works best.0 -

Non-existent though? I've been looking for cheap bar end shifters for ages, much more expensive than I thought they'd be.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
It looks as if there is a shiftmate that would work (model 2 I think) if I went for Campag 10 speed on the wheels, although I would only have the use of 9 gears, due to the smaller number of clicks on the shifter.
I could use friction mode (my original thought when I bought the cheap Shimano shifters) but in practice we have been spoiled by index gears...
Don't know about you but I balk slightly at £100+ for Campag TT shifters!

Just run in friction mode, then you can run any combination you like - 8, 9, 10, Shimano, Campagnolo, anything. This what I do and it works a treat. Very handy for when you use a turbo wheel or have to borrow one if the p***ture fairy visits>0
