Out for a ride in the rain yesterday and rear span out on some white painted road surface. Rear mech lower hanger appears bend and shifting seems to be hard in one gear. Also appears tension in the mech is gone despite some shifting action still there.

Take it to the LBS or try and bend it back?

I guess you'll be needing a new mech hanger. Hopefully by bending it has saved your rear mech
  • Rear mech hangers are designed to be sacrificial. Best get it replaced; they're not expensive.

You could ask your LBS to try straightening out the hanger. Park Tools do a tool specifically for this, and it worked a treat on my bike which came with a bent hanger from CRC.

Although to be honest, you're probably better off just getting a new hanger as it's already taken a good knock and will be weaker by being bent back into place. If it was me, I'd replace the hanger.

Replace, heat up old hanger with hot air gun, straighten it, keep it in tool box for emergency replacement.

Remeber to grease everything up and torque it into place when replacingf/refitting.
  • A new hanger for my Bianchi was IRO £25 from my LBS, i think they're IRO £16-£20 online.
You sometimes don't notice how bent they are till you get it off. Mine was claimable so i wasnt bothered about the cost, but i think i could have straightened it acceptably if i clamped it in a vice or even laid it flat and took a good sized hammer to it.

Heat it first - it'll just weaken it if you try and straighten it cold. Good chance it'll snap as well.

Laying it sideways in a vice will do the job or borrow the special tool.

Yeah LBS said they would try to bend it back. Trouble is the bike is Kiron Scandium from Wiggle and they have sold out of hangars for it! It appears to be the same as a Raleigh Cadent 3/4 so I have ordered one of those from Pro_bike kit.
