    I am pretty sure you can use a normal crank extractor with some sort of metal disc at the end... would a pound coin fit? maybe slightly too big... the tool they now sell is nothing more than a plug to combine with a crank extractor.... which is very pricey for what it is, but not unaffordable in absolute sense

    Nope you can't use a normal crank extractor. You need a 2 or 3 arm gear puller. (about £15 from any motorist centre) and the campagnolo metal plug.
