Hi there - I'm looking at running a bike with a single speed front crank and a sram 10speed rear derailleur. My question is - can I use a track chainset and replace the "COG" with one off an appropriate double crank? Or can I run the original (presumably this won't work as it will be set up for a single chain?) Ta very much

Is the bike already a single speed and you want to run gears or the other way around? If it's a geared bike and you want to run a single chainset it should be ok, you might want to run a chaincatcher just in case(I ride loads on the big ring of my race bike and never have any problems, and almost exclusively on my TT bike)
My single speed bike runs a road chainset(Truativ Elita) with the inner ring not fitted with no problems either. So you shouldn't need to use a track chainset unless you want it for looks.

In my experience both will work Okay. I run 1x9 on my kaffenbach when I switch it from commuter touring duties to CX work using an 11-34 casette and a 44 XT crankset, you can get spacers if you just remove the inner rings , I have used a single ring miche track chainset a few years ago but I found the gearing with the front ring too high for what I was doing.

Just about to change it over for the winter again now.

How are the hills going? is it getting that easy you dont need a Granny ring anymore?

    Ah - thanks guys.

    I've got a Dahon Hammerhead frame: http://shop.d2leisuregroup.co.uk/product44360265/Dahon-Hammerhead-50-Folding-Bike-with-Flat-Handlebars-2006.html
and I'm thinking at what I'm going to do with it.

I thought about a single speed commuter bike (with chain tensioner), but then I thought maybe put a rear shifter on (Apex?), have a wide cog spread and a brake lever on the left and make it a bit more "utility", so was thinking that I should put a track/singlespeed chainset on, but a normal chainset without the inner ring and a chain guard makes a lot of sense.

The small wheels mean I need a big front cog to stop spinning out, but it also means a nice nippy town bike.

Bit of a Frankenbike project - so not really worried about looks - indeed more about creating something "fun" I think!

Edit - oh ps - Tim - defo need the small ring for the climbs too!
