Grinding noise coming from headset
Good evening,
This evening whilst adjusting my brake calipers I noticed a grating/grinding noise coming from the headset when turning the bars.
At the weekend it absolutely chucked it down with rain and I am assuming that this has contributed in some way.
Can anyone suggest what may have happened as I had assumed (wrongly?) that headsets were sealed and that water shouldn't get in, and also what I can do to remedy it.
The headset is a 2010 Shimano 105
Thanks in advance,
Nick

Its got contaminated with water/cack.
Do a search on this here forum for how to strip and clean, re-grease etc: this was discussed a while ago.
if you can't fond it drop another post I'll I'll pop it up again (oooeeeerrrr).0 -
Thanks Yossie. I've had a look at a few of the guides online but I'm not sure my diy skills are up to it. I don't want to take it apart and not have any spare parts should anything need to be replaced.
I may brave it tomorrow and then take it to the LBS in the week if necessary.

As it's quite new I would imagine a clean and regrease will sort it. It's best to start off knowing what to expect though i.e. does it have sealed cartridges, caged bearings etc. There are probably technical docs on the bike makers web site.
I left mine way too long before looking at mine, several years to be precise, and the bottom set of bearings were rusted up beautifully.0 -

Nah - simple job - hour and a half first time round, after that 30 mins once you know what goes where. The fact that the bike is new will make it all so much easier to work on.

Full instructions at the bottom of the link - I did try and copy and paste them in but I can't make the wfe's laptop thing work properly.....

Yossie, thanks for the link and the guide.
I followed it yesterday morning - it took about an hour in the end and all is feeling good again.

The seals on bike bearings are more about keeping the grease in than the water and sh1t out. If they were sealed to car bearing standards the steering would be stiff as hell.
If you remember this simple fact then you'll look after your bike better.
Pressure washing the bearing areas of a bike is also bad news.0
