Block and chain

Hi,
I have a 9 speed block bought with a wheel 2 years ago second hand. I only use them for racing. I am able to ride with the chain i had already on the bike on the 52 ring with no problems but when i change to the 42 ring the chain slips on about 4 of the gears.
I have now changed the chain for a 9 speed chain (bought new) and again exactly the same happens. It hasn't been a problem in racing as i've never come off the 52 ring but i would like to know why this happening. I would have thought the gears it slips on would slip on both the 52 and 42 ring not just the 42 but maybe they need replacing? I asked one bike mechanic and he said it's the rear mech, any idea's?

I'd say it was the cassette (being worn), not the mech - if it's slipping. If it's jumping out of gear it could be the rear indexing has gone awry.

You can rarely tell just by looking at the thing, but if the chain is skipping forwards on the sprocket teeth I'd say it's a worn cassette. Can occur in one chainring and not the other, but I've never been sure why
