On my winter bike I have a pair of Mavic SL wheels but the back was in an accident and broke a few spokes and cannot replace as the thread from spoke nipple to the rim is goosed.

I was thinking of getting a new rim, new set of spokes and using the existing hub. Would this be cheaper? I have often heard that the hub of the wheel is the most expensive part.

Not with Ksyrium SLs - replacement rims are about £170 each and spokes about a fiver each. Also be aware that Mavic don't support products more than 5 years old.

I have a pair of 'dead' Ksyriums for this reason - when you have more that one bike, it's not unusual for a decent pair of wheels to be still going strong after 5 years if you don't ride them in crappy weather.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
