Ultegra6700 Hollowtech II BB not quite fitting...!

Hi,

I've recently bought an S-Works SL3 framset and am kitting it out with Ultegra.

I've been trying to get the BB in, and all is well - I thread the drive side in and tighten with tool, then the same for the non-drive side, however, at the point where it wants to stop turning, this second side is still a few mm away from the touching the frame....

Is this normal? There were no spacers in the box for the BB, or anything like that, so am not quite sure where to go from here......I was keen to get a load of the build done today, and the bike shop is shut, so all very frustrating!!

Any advice would be amazing!

Thanks,

Nick

sounds like there is not enough thread cut in the BB shell.

    LBS time.

But first just to check you are fitting it correctly try without the dirt shield between the cups. if the cups screw in fin then it is user fitting problem.

  • Just a thought ... If the bb shell is drilled for the purpose of fitting an under bracket cable guide, just make sure the screw holding it in place isn't protruding into the bb shell and fouling the cup you are trying to screw in.

Also, make sure that the inner cover isnt becoming dislodged and not not fitting into the other bearing cup properly, hence stopping it screwing all the way home. Like the chap above said, the cable guide bolt may be knocking it offline.

I'd be very supprised if the frame has a problem. Spec frames are noramlly pretty good with regards to QC.

Fing LOL I have seen some more than 1mm out of parallel when facing them.

they are no better or worse than any mass produced frame.

I had a different, but slightly related problem. The BB cups were fine, but the cranks wouldn't tighten flush with the BB.

As a temporary solution, I put a cassette spacer between the frame and the BB cup. Worked perfect .... and is still there 2 years later!

Take a pic, post the pic.

    Perhaps it needs facing.
  • Hi all, thanks for all the advice, it's all been really helpful.

First step was to check the screws...all good.

Then, removed the dirt sheild thing inside and tried the bearings on their own..... light bulb time! Turns out that the ends were in fact screwing in all the way, it's just that the drive side has a much wider metal bit (excuse my bad terminology) that the BB end screws flush to, so it looks really flush, but the non-drive side isn't so big, so, although the BB end screws down onto it, it doesn't look quite so flat against the frame. Add in there all the grease that had squeezed out, and turns out i just wasn't looking properly.

Again, thanks for all the advice though! Unfortunately I still have to wait until the LBS is open as I don't have anything I can cut the steerer tube down with :(
