any SPD pedal with normal shoes is a crap. the SPD is proud of the cage so is very uncomfortable.
SPDs with SPD shoes or Flats with 5:10s"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Problem with the double sided ones is that you don't really want to be messing about flipping them over onto the correct side to get them to work, especially on a DH course.
As nick said, you're best off using one or the other.0 -
As I said yesterday on another post - I have one sided SPDs and they are a nightmare - especially on downhill where you really need to be looking ahead at all times (not down at your feet to see what side is facing up)
I think I'm going to get the Shimano M647 - proper double-sided SPD but with a larger platform for a bit more stability"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

Think you right guys as I use pedals with toe clips and straps..they are always going down and need to play with them to fit my shoes back again... :x0
