Urgent! Roval Control SL Disc vs Crest on 240s

Need to finally buy some. I am 89kg now and on the market for a new wheelset. Currently riding Mavic Crossmax SL on Ceramic Bearings (Hybrids from BOCA)- good wheels, but heavy @ 1607g and accelerating really slowly- the only good thing about those is, they are really!!!!!!! bombproof for the type of mtbing I do, stiff and solid. Looking for something lighter now. I am into fast XC with some technical stuff, not necessarily anything heavy. Love roots, rocks,..etc. but like to take those slowly (like to enjoy it). 1385g (stated by Specialized are the Roval Control SL Disc) while Crests on 240s, 6 bolt are 1390g. I know, it is only a 5g differnece (in terms of weight), but Rovals at the moment I can get for £359.99 while Crests on 240s are £489.53. I have tried 240s before and they are amazing hubs, Rovals' I can say nothing about. Any ideas?

The Rovals are fairly tough, but flexy. And at 90kg that could be an issue. That said any wheel approaching this weight is going to be more flexy, but 32 spoked builds at least stiffen them up somewhat.
I wouldn't expect miracles in terms of acceleration - you set to lose 100g per wheel which is decent enough, but not enough to go from really slowly to blisteringly fast as 1600g is light/medium weight anyway.
If you want the least weight for your money then the Rovals are the way to go, but if you can afford it, I'd take the DT and Crest as will be stiffer.
What tyres do you run?0 -
thanks very much for that supersonic- obviously I will take that into the account- safety first! In the end I might get onto something Rovals will not cope with- money is not an issue in here and I like my teeth to be where they are0

one thing I forgot to ask about----I have tried Dt Swiss XR 4.2D which anded up to be a little bit flexier than Mavic XC 717Disc I had before. What is your opinion on Mavic XC717Disc vs Crests? If you would not mind. Thanks in advance0

The main difference is that the Crests are shallower and wider, and uneyeletted. This drops some 50g off the weight (which is not to be sniffed at), but 717 are proven performers, tough, relatively stiff and last a long time. 717 are a good option for the home builder and the eyelets help when continually adjusting spokes. Crests a great rim for those who want that little bit less weight, and so far appear to be pretty strong too. Will also take a wider tyre more easily.0

Is it safe to say, that Crests will take a little bit more beating that 717s, while being lighter?- I know, that there is a few quid differnece between those two and I am not worried about it, and as you said, 717s are already proven, BUT weight 405g (according to my scales) while Crest are 340g. I have been doing a research on those over the last year, basically, and still cannot decide 65g a wheel is a lot (I would say)0

I'd trust the 717 more over harder terrain... but I'd risk the Crests ;-).0

I am sooooooooo into Crests- will give them a go. Worst case scenario- I dump the rims and stick with CX Rays plus 240s on XC717s. Thanks0
