get a fluid one, you don't mention budget, kinetic road machine is great, good road feel, but pricey, also the cycleops ones are ok

no reason a trainer should mess up hubs, but they can wear tyres out, using a cheap wheel with a trainer tyre is worth consideringmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
There have been LOADS of previous posts asking about turbo trainers, so have a quick search when you've got a minute However, to sum up pretty much every thread, here's how they go.
1) Recommend a fluid one.
2) Either Kurt Kinetic Road Machine or Cycleops Fluid 2.
I went with a Kurt Kinetic Rock n Roll because a) it was on sale b) it's got a lifetime warranty c) it's got a more realistic road feel.
Personally I'd always pay a little more for the Kurt Kinetic as there's no possibility of it leaking oil all over your carpet/floor and it's got a lifetime warranty. The early Cycleops trainers had a leaking issue which has been fixed now apparently.
A trainer won't damage your bike, though as sungod says, they can wear down your tyres.0
