Cant index gears - component issue?

So, new bike build. Have fitted 105 5700 shifters, rear mech and chain. Cassette is Ultegra 6700 11 - 25.
For the life of me I cannot get the gears properly indexed. New cables were fitted, well and truly stretched by now as they have been on for two weeks. The main problem seems to be that when the smallest sprocket is in tune with the rest, the largest sprocket is out and vice versa. So, I have even tried adjusting the rear mech limits. All to no avail.
I'm now thinking that perhaps the ultegra cassette is just not compatible with the 105 components. Could this be the problem?

both 10spd there should be no issues.

Chances are you've either screwed something together wrong or cut the loop to the rear mech too short. Give it a bit more length (fnar fnar) if you're happy with the rest of the setup.- - - - - - - - - -

Rear mech loop is a good shout, or in fact, look and think for any other reason you might be getting friction in the cabling... cable sitting properly under the BB if it goes that way, ferrules all sitting properly in all the stops etc etc... cables all new and lubed up if needed... friction is what springs to mind first of all.0

Another thing to check is if you have attached the cable to the rear mech correctly. If you put it on the 'wrong' side of the clamp, the indexing will be out and movement will be a little too short.0

Thank for all those tips. The loop could be an issue, I have some spare housing so may increase the length as you suggest. Plus check the contact points of the cable and lube as you suggest.
Goose, which side of the cable clamp should it be clamped too? INearest to the wheel or furthest away from the wheel?0 -

It's not which side of the clamp it goes, rather which side of the bolt it goes, ie above or below it.

Not sure, only have Campag on the road bikes in this house
I would think you'll want it so the cable is in the straightest line coming out from the outer housing. If it's at more of an angle, the effective distance moved by the mech is less.
Connecting a rear mech on the wrong side or around a mis-aligned clamp (Hubub modification) is a hack used to get different makes of mech to work with different levers.0 -
Thanks again chaps. Of course I have the Shimano destructions already as they came with the rear mech. I did read them at some stage.... Think I have the cable clamped wrongly though by the look of it. I was just working from my experience of replacing cables on my other bike which has old shimano on it.
So, I will attend to all the cabling issues, and report back.0 -
Do you have the spacer behind the cassette?
It's there because the 10spd cassette is slightly narrower than 7,8 or 9spd ones - without it I think the shifting would be a bit erratic as it wouldn't be tightened properly.I'm left handed, if that matters.0 -
Another thing to check is the gear hanger. If its taken a knock and bent a bit you can never get the shifting right.0
