I've been looking at a few bikes - carrera vanquish, boardman road race, kona honky tonk - but I think i've narrowed it down to the Trek 1.2 and Allez Sport. I take both for a test spin on Tues to see how they feel, although I suspect I might immediately feel comfortable with the 1.2 as I just had one, but the 09 version.

Just wondering what bike people would chose to have, if you could only have one of these two?

Also, can you fit panniers on the allez sport?? It's mainly for commuting and weekend 30-40 milers, but occasionally I'd like to use for a bit of touring, say 2-3 times a year. LEJOG sort of stuff.

The Trek or the Specialized?!

My brother has just bought his first road bike: The Allez. He seems very pleased with it (complains that the "motor" isn't up to scratch).

The ONLY thing I've heard against the Allez is that a lot of people have it. It does seem very popular. That doesn't sound like a negative: it's probably popular because it's good.

Try both and see what you think.

yeah that's what I'm thinking, not sure if I want to own the Escort of the bike-world! But like you say, it must be good for so many people to buy, recommend to other etc. But can it take a pannier rack??
  • I had a very similar issue a year or so ago.
Many people say "buy the one that fits best" but coming from an MTB any road bike was going to feel wierd. In the finish my head won and I bought the Trek, 4,000 miles later and I haven't regretted it for a second.
In short I don't think you'll go far wrong with either and don't stress too much as it'll only be a winter hack once you've sold a kidney to satisfy your pursuit of carbon loveliness!
Many people say the tyres on the spesh are mince as are the saddles on the Treks but they are very personal items and easily changed.
    Good luck and keep peddaling!

I got the allez sport about a year ago now and have had no trouble or complaints with it,its pretty nippy and handles well and as of yet i have not come across any hills that have beaten it,and theres some pretty big hills around the Lake District,in response to your other question there are no mountig bolt holes for your paniers.
Hope this helps with your choice and happy cycling. :D
