Bike fits - cost & transferability

I'm considering getting a bike fit, but I have two reservations.

#1 - the local one I've seen in Fulham seems to be £200. Is that normal? How much would the cheapest one in London worth doing cost?

#2 - would the information etc be transferable to another bike - given that the bikes I have have different sized frames? If so, then how easy is it to transfer? (unfortunately, one of my bikes is a long way away)

So long as your crank length, pedal system and to an extent saddle are the same and you can achieve the same saddle layback, height and reach to bars and drop to bars using reasonable length/height of stem then will be transferrable.

Saddle is tricky if different as some key measurements are from saddle nose and not all saddles are equal in length.

I'd highly recommend Bike Whisperer in Ealing. He'll explain I'm sure how to transfer to another bike or do it for you for £75.

Assuming the bike you are getting fitted for, is roughly the right size to start with, you should aim for future bikes to be similarly configurable subject to end purpose (eg racy or sportivey).

You need to take into account frame angles too - ie the angle of the seatpost.

If the Fulham one is at Profeet, it is the Retul system and Barry at bespoke cycles will do you the same Retul fit for £175.

Having done the retul system fit, you end up with measurements that are independent of the frame so you can transfer from frame to frame.

+1 for a retul fit. I received a full analysis of all the distances of contact points etc

I saw the Bike Whisperer last year for £95. I think the prices went up after that, but I'm not sure what to.

I would whole heartedly recommend him though. He was very knowledgeable and patient, spent a long time getting things right, plus it was a really friendly and relaxed atmosphere (the fit is done in his living room!)

It's £180 at bike whisperer. Second that the atmosphere is nice and the fit fantastic. Getting him to build my new bike, doing some modded di2 stuff, surprised they were well up for it, exciting!

    Very true.
I had a fit done with an Aliante and the position was great but then changed to a Spesh Romin. This is a FAR better saddle for me but not only are the dimensions different I think I sit in a different place relative to the length.

Now cannot get fit right again and live 110miles from Adrian Timmis to resolve. This has caused tondonitis in my left hamstring insertion that I cannot seem to shake off.

For transferring a position from one bike to another, the frame angles may be different so you ignore angles alltogether and use [x,y] coordinates.
Use the bottom bracket as [0,0].
Mark x=0 on the top tube for convenience to measure back and forward.
Position the saddle and bars at the correct x and y.
Make sure you have the same size cranks and same brand/thickness pedals or compensate accordingly.
  • Hi,

I found a Retul bike fitter in Reading for £40, sounds a little suspect. But I think he has just started up and maybe trying to drum in the business.

    http://www.awsportsperformance.com/page14.htm

I booked myself into the bike whisper, just because I wasn't sure how good a Retul would help with my cleat setup. And they were very helpful on the phone.

Most fitters offer a discounted rate for a second bike, I think the fitting service (4 hours) is: 1hour on a review, 1 hour on your cleats and assuming 2 on the bike fit. So maybe they will do a second bike for half price. --- obviously i didn't read your post properly :) not going to help if your bike is miles away

    Hope that helps
    Matt
